something i have been wondering about lately.. whether you believe in god or not, are a christian or some other religion or no religion at all, i'd be interested in your opinion.. according to those who believe in the bible including most christians, god condemns the use of 'special' powers/abilities.
for example, esp, tarot, astrology, consulting a medium, spells etc.
however, if god created us, did he not give us the ability to develop and use such powers?
there is definitely something out there.
I was silly enough to do a Ouija board once in a flat where I lived and we supposedly contacted the spirit of someone killed quite violently. Ever since that day the flat had cold spots and an atmosphere which was threatening and uncomfortable. Things went missing and on several occasions things were moved to different places in the room. Once or twice this happened with just myself in the flat so it wasn't down to someone playing silly buggers. The incident that freaked us out most, and led to us leaving the flat was when my brother went down two flights of stairs to the loo and some thing banged on the door and told him to get a move on. This was in a totally empty house where we were the only people there.
My ex has also seen the ghost of my mother on several occasions and my wife (who is very sensitive to these things) has felt a presence a couple of times when wierd shit has happened and I've inexplicably avoided harm. Personally I would like to believe but I've still got a healthy edge of scepticism as I haven't actually seen anything apart from the ouija incident which would give me beleivable evidence of something beyond normal explaination, but then I am an engineer and am inclined to only believe things when they have smacked me in the face.

the quote that I thought was beautiful was :
"As a tool to introduce people to the [group as a] community, it's a positive thing, but I think the way they go about it is a sales pitch, which is not what religion's about," said senior and dance major Nicole Phillips. "It's a dark, manipulative way of doing it. It's through consumerist tactics, marketing - it seems more like a business than spiritual practice - if it's about spirituality, you can't try and sell that."
so true, so insightful
hi, just wanted to introduce myself, i am 28 and from london and i am looking for some opinions.
i have family that are jw's and in my late teens i began bible studies.
i came close to baptism but was too scared about what i thought i would be giving up if i took that path.
My god a Londoner! We don't see many of them round here.
Don't do it, really, being serious, please don't do it. It will only end in tears, and pain, tears and pain. Honestly.
It's not the truth, I'm sorry but it's a load of bare faced lies. We know, we've been there. Some of us have been there for a long long time, I was and I hated it. You'd hate it, people think you're a wierdo as a JW and let's face it they are right. The beliefs are oppressive and as a young lady you will be expected to marry some spotty little wanker who is in 'good spiritual standing' and probably has bad breath and a suppressed bondage fetish. People will pity you, do you want to go through your life being pitied? and what about Xmas? I only really discovered Xmas 13 years ago and it's fun, do you want to give that up and deny your future children the joys of rabid consumerism?
It's a big pile of pants, you know those smelly white Y fronts your favourite uncle wears, with the skid marks and the none too subtle staining?
What more can I say?
Steve
.
very disturbing indeed!
what does jwd think of this new trend?
sorry, I was referring to the proposed system which will be used in phones - it squawks to the network letting the network know it is still alive and the triangulation is done on these signals by satellite recievers
This system wouldn't work with traditional gps if it is a passive system
i've received one or two for being "unpatriotic" .
over not "believing in jesus (supposedly), all as a pretty small kid.
anyone else?
the one positive thing my father did for me was give me a 'take no shit' attitude. I have NEVER turned the other cheek, the fact that I played rugby and was a seriously pissed off prop forward helped.

My highest is 321 but what's your best score where the penguin sticks in nose first? Mine's 207.8
i have become so much more independent and in some ways demanding as i have stopped being a jw.
there was a time when i was literally a doormat for my first husband.
but i have found from being single and then add to that losing the grip from the jw rules, i have become more independence and in many ways more of an opinion.
I'm alot more chilled out than I ever used to be. After coming out of the dubs and the extreme repression I became very militant when I felt put upon. Now I am more prepared to let things slide and weigh up whether or not it is worth causing an arguement over
i'm one of those people who constantly gets reminded of random things by other random things, especially word associations & music... .
things that remind me of the my life as a jw (and i use the word 'life' very loosly) .
1. all along the watchtower (song by jimi hendrix) .
Very cool. I like Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel for a funeral. It's song they played in the animated movie Watership Down when one of the rabbits was near death.
I like that too but I don't want everyone being sad at my funeral. I was going to have barber's 'Adagio for strings' which is a haunting piece of classical music used in Platoon and my fave piece of music, it would definitely be atmospheric. I've decided that at my funeral I want people to celebrate my life and remember the cool stuff, not that I'm not around any more.
Nouveau cuisine (remember the miniscule portions dished out by the stingy hair-netted plastic-gloved sisters when they used to serve hot food at assemblies?)
Hell that was so many years ago. They only stopped doing this because people would queue up before the prayer so they could get served reasonably quickly. It always tasted of plastic too!
